I do not generally have a very high view of MTV–style TV, especially the recent rash of The Real World rip-offs like Survivor. But I just watched Justin and Kelly on American Idol, and they were on fire! Just smokin’!
Both performers were very happy to be in front of the audience. This is essential for success — the performer must believe that the audience is their friend. Stage presence results from a rapport with the audience. (Hostile audiences, of course, require a different character, but the myth of the hostile audience rarely incarnates itself for most competent performers.)
Justin’s improv stylings give him that blue-eyed soul that makes Chicago vocalist Bill Champlin my favorite male vocalist of all time. Kelly’s voice is both a natural talent and a well-trained skill, the product of years of hard work. By turns firecracker-hot and milky-soft, Kelly’s voice is a rare gem. Paula Abdul was right; she can do anything and go anywhere. My advice to Kelly: get a clueful agent — NOW!
