Orthodoxy

Orthodoxy: This is the Orthodoxy page on the Open Directory Project. Any links I could compile would be superfluous comparatively. Many thanks to Tim for his labor on this site. Tim and I also work on O Great Mystery. This was formerly the website for our diocese, but it is now administered entirely by the two of us, with some assistance from others in our parish. It is currently in progress. Tim's personal website is WorldTimZone.

I am also the webmaster for our church's website. St. Athanasius Orthodox Church is in Nicholasville, KY, just outside of Lexington.

On a related note, look at Mother Frederica's article, "First Visit to an Orthodox Church—Twelve Things I Wish I'd Known." This is an excellent resouce for people who are new to Orthodox worship, by one of American Orthodoxy's most articulate and understanding spokespersons, Frederica Mathewes-Green.

Literature and Journalism

Bartleby.com: Great books online. Wickedly awesome site. I want everyone to know about it. Bookmark it, visit it often. Need to look at a poem? Want to quote the Bard? Looking for Gray's Anatomy or Bartlett's Famous Quotations? Bartleby.com.

Washington Times Online: The other half of the media, on the web. Get the stories that other sources will not report. See also the Washington Times National Weekly Edition.

Re:generation Magazine: This is an excellent 'zine. Imagine: 20-something hipness measured by intellectual content. Maybe we aren't so bad, after all. You are warned: this site's design is a little too hip for its own good. Frames, Java, lots of images.

Music

Really Deep Thoughts: The official Tori Amos fanzine. If professional design counts for whether it's official, this is the real thing. See also Tori, the official site. Confused? The first is the fanzine for the official fanclub (so they say), the second the official (read: artist-approved, record-company sponsored) site.

The Muse's Muse: Songwriting aids. Excellent resource for advice, networking, tips and tools.

Indigo Girls: One of the most lyrical and poetic of the great '90's groups. They have become heavily political of late, which has soured their once beautiful tone.

Yes: Still one of the most creative bands of the rock era.

King's X: Perhaps the most musically talented and technically proficient metal band in the past fifteen years. Top of the list in the progressive metal genre.

Dream Theater: Also in the top five of progressive metal. This site is not very well designed, in my opinion. You have been warned.

Geeky Stuff

Finger/Whois/Ping Interface at Episteme.

GNU's Not Unix! The Free Software Foundation, which was created by Richard M. Stallman (aka RMS), created the GNU utilities which, along with the kernel developed by Linus Torvalds, forms the GNU/Linux operating system. Though it currently has a large share in the server market, it is also gaining momentum on the desktop.

Star Wars: This is the official Lucasfilm site. Jedi Net: This is an excellent site, "by the fans, for the fans." It is a bit image-heavy, so it may take awhile to load on slow connections. Also, it often contains spoiler information. Tread carefully. If you don't understand why Star Wars is under geeky stuff, I can't explain it to you.
