In a recent comment, I mentioned that Sixpence None the Richer singing in a commercial for a contraceptive pill struck me like Petra doing a Trojan commercial. Well, it seems one sectarian cleric has done me one better: WWJD prophylactics.

That is pretty funny, but I was just thinking last night about my neighbors (who I can hear pretty well through the floor for some reason) and how they’re a man and a woman living together (unmarried). I thought, what do you expect? Does any group or institution in America (excluding the Orthodox Church) really give young people in our country a good understanding of love, marriage and sexuality? You can’t use what you don’t have, and I think so many young people just don’t really understand why premarital sex is bad (since most Protestant churches pretty much teach that sex is bad whether married or not–we just don’t talk about it).

Of course I’m not condoning premarital sex. I’m just saying we ought to do something about it and remember that most kids don’t know why they shouldn’t do it.

I’m not sure whether to laugh or apologize on behalf of Protestants everywhere…EXCEPT, of course, that I don’t think ALL Protestants owe an apology here, and given that I’m not of the Fundamentalist (or the wacko) bent, an apology from me might not mean much.

As far as a “good understanding of love, marriage and sexuality,” I think I grew up with a pretty decent one–not primarily because of what my church, which was relatively silent on the matter, taught, but because of my parents.

Pete, of course you needn’t apologize. Protestantism is, by definition, completely heterogenous. I blame only the Rev. Dr. Morehead.
