When I walk into an Orthodox Church… one is immediately aware that one has stepped into the presence of what Saint Paul would call the whole family in heaven and earth. You have stepped into the precincts of heaven!

Believe it or not, someone named a church Hope Springs Community Church.. It reminds me of the Alexander Pope poem, An Essay on Man, Epistle I. Line 95: “Hope springs eternal in the human breast:/ Man never is, but always to be blest:/ The soul, uneasy and confind from home,/ Rests and expatiates in a life to come.” Their titular allusion to great literature appears to have been completely unwitting. Their slogan is, “Where Hope happens.” It strikes me that if they were not 100% clue-free, they would have made their slogan the quote above. All of which assumes an answer to the first question: Why would anyone name their church that? (Note that Pope’s pessimistic gnosticism seems to be completely absent from their mission statement and strategy.)
